Anyone here canning vegetables ??? Empty Anyone here canning vegetables ???

Post by CARDMAN Mon Jul 15, 2013 7:00 am

Just curious if anyone on here did their own vegetable canning , I have about 42 pounds of tomatoes to do now and many many more to come , I really don't know what I am doing but I am trying to learn as I go , Just wondering if anyone else is doing this and if they think it is worth all the time and effort that goes into the whole process .

EDIT: Just wanted to add this THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE.

Have never done it but we did as kids. It's a dying breed I think but I wish we did it, always taste better than out of the store. Were doing the raising our own pigs for butchering, wish you and I were closer we could swap veggies for pork and eggs.

Good luck with it and keep it up, you will always have veggies this winter.

If we were closer I would Dennis , Was thinking about doing the egg thing also , What kind of hens are best for laying eggs , Do you know ? Canned 12 jars of Tomatoes this morning , have more to do , need more jars . I know the tomatoes are way better than store bought , Love them , also growing carrots , green beans, onions, potatoes , squash, cucumbers , green peppers.

Not sure what kind of hens we have, have 8 that can lay right now and 6 more that are growing up and will soon be laying. Hoping for baby pigs in a few months. You know if you get tired of canning tomatoes you can use them for salsa and start canning it. I will check on the chickens. We get white, brown and sometimes  greenish/blue eggs, a double yoker now and them, way more than we can eat. Have to give a few dozen away a week so they don't get old on us. Have (2) 350 pound pigs in the pen ready to go right now but not enough freezer space currently and hoping she will have some babies soon so waiting on that.

Are you going to do pickles with some of the cucumbers? If so I can get you a great and easy recipe for pickles that my dad used to do, there called 9 day sunshine pickles, probably the easiest and best tasting pickle I have ever eaten.

Bought a Hen , She now has (3) eggs , think we are going to let them grow up for more laying hens in the future , not sure what kind she is . We have never done this before so we don't really know what we are doing. My husband knows more about it than I do .

Old lady had to go to work (she hates me saying that) . Yea she is , how long should she lay on them Dennis in a days time ? We did this back in first grade in Indiana (hatched eggs) But that was like a million years ago to me.

Not sure how long she will per day, probably most of the time besides eating/drinking. I'm not sure but I believe it is 10 days or so but I may be off there a little bit. My brother and sister n law have a incubator and have hatched out several dozen. We just gather the eggs everyday. Wish some of you on here were closer I could keep you from having to buys eggs ever again. We have nearly 8 dozen or more currently.

Yeah Incubator is what we used in first grade , how much does one cost ? Just in case she is not doing this right. Was thinking about getting some turkeys also, do you know anything about them , all I know is that they taste good at Christmas and Thanksgiving.. LOL I wish we were closer , I could use the eggs , we eat a lot of them every week. Keep it up we are going to have to start a Farming section LOL. (Farming Authority) .

I seen some on ebay for $125.00 shipped. Some were higher than that. I just get ours at the feed store, certain times a year they sell pullets for $2.85 each, usually get 6 at a time and keep them in a old bird cage with constant light on them especially in the winter until they get their feathers in and then they usually do fine. We haven't lost any of the chicks yet but then it takes I guess 8-9 months before they start laying.

Yeah I knew it took a long time before they started laying eggs . I have seen them here for $3 each. Across the street from me is a chicken farm 120,000 birds in 6 houses (Pilgrim's Pride) . My old lady works for Pilgrim's pride where they process them , its like the biggest company in this town (NOW) . Thanks for the Info Dennis.
